Trieste and surrounding area

Attractions

Trieste is always worth a visit. There is so much to explore and discover in the beautiful university city and its surrounding area. Always expect contrasts, the unexpected and something special that tells of a varied and multicultural history. Here is a selection of hotspots and attractions.

Just a few steps from Ca' Argento is Piazza Unità, lined with magnificent palazzi and the city hall. It is not only the main square in Trieste and a popular postcard motif, but also one of the few squares in Europe that is open to the sea. The perfect starting point for a walk along the Rive di Trieste and to Molo Audace.

The Roman theatre in the San Giusto district is a monumental testimony to Roman architecture and culture. Today it is used as an atmospheric venue for concerts and theatre performances. The archaeological finds are on display in the J.J. Winckelmann Museum of Antiquities near the Cattedrale di San Giusto

Yes, Trieste too has a Canale Grande. In contrast to the famous waterway in Venice, however, life is much quieter and more leisurely here. Picturesque cafés and palazzi line both sides of the riverbank, connected by the Ponte Rosso. The end of the canal is marked by the imposing neoclassical architecture of the church of Sant' Antonio Nuovo.

The medieval castle and fortress, perching on the hill of the same name, high above the old town centre, is without doubt one of Trieste’s best-known landmarks. The Castello is used for exhibitions, theatre performances, concerts and other cultural events and houses a collection of ancient Roman sculptures and architectural fragments from the surrounding area.

Panoramic views and a profusion of different plants. The Castello Miramare is located on the tip of the Grignano headland and therefore has the most exclusive view of the Gulf of Trieste. The complex was built around 1860 by Archduke Maximilian von Habsburg and is surrounded by a 22-hectare park with rare plant species and monumental trees.

Trieste offers a variety of museum experiences –  ranging from art, literature, history and science to music. Particularly popular are the Museo Revoltella of modern art or the Natural History Museum - the oldest of its kind in Italy with over two million exhibits. The Trieste Marine Aquarium and the interactive science museum Immaginario Scientifico are also well worth a visit.

The former Trieste fish market is now home to the Salone degli Incanti - a multi-purpose centre for cultural events.  The Barcola district - the official beach of the people of Trieste - is always worth a visit. The renowned Barcolana sailing regatta also takes place here every second Sunday in October. Don’t miss out!

A few kilometres outside the city lies the Trieste Karst region, a rocky high plateau and popular wine region with a wide range of leisure activities. In the numerous agriturismi and osmize you can sample local wines, cured hams, cheeses and other local products from the Italian and Slovenian Karst. Don't miss: a cave tour in the Grotta Gigante!
