Trieste and surrounding area

Activities

Trieste and the surrounding area have plenty to offer anyone who likes to be active on holiday! Between the beach, the Adriatic Sea and the unique natural landscape of the Karst, there are many possibilities - panoramic hiking trails or mountain bike tours, diving hotspots, kitesurfing and sailing schools.

The FVGcard is a personalised and non-transferable digital ticket that is valid for 48 hours or 1 week from the first use and includes free access to numerous attractions in Trieste and the surrounding area, free tastings and discounts.

Hiking on the Rilke trail
Popular short hike near Sistiana, north of Trieste. Just a 30-minute drive from Trieste, the Rilke Trail is an ideal destination - especially in combination with a visit to the Castello di Duino, which is also well worth seeing.

Biking on the "Giordano Cottur" cycle path
The beautiful cycle path runs partly along the route of the former Pula-Divača railway line and leads from the Trieste district of San Giacomo into the Karst. There are also further routes of varying degrees of difficulty for mountain bike fans.

Hiking in Val Rosandra
Pure nature and stunningly beautiful and varied hiking routes await you in the Val Rosandra Nature Park, just 10 kilometres outside the city of Trieste. Hotspot: the spectacular 35 metre high Rosandra waterfall!

Trieste has plenty to offer beach lovers: between Marina Julia and Muggia you can visit a different beach practically every day. Marina Julia is the perfect beach for kitesurfers and windsurfers. The bay of Sistiana, on the other hand, offers pure beach feeling for families and sun worshippers;  with well-equipped facilities, beach bars and exclusive beach and wellness offers in Portopiccolo. Along the coastal road there are numerous free beaches and secluded bays accessible only on foot.

The Gulf of Trieste lives for sailing. No wonder - conditions here are absolutely perfect. The sailing season in the northern Adriatic begins in April and often doesn't end until October or even November. Trieste locals are at the top of the class: numerous sailing schools and historical societies promote sailing from an early age. There is also a wide range of offers for tourists. And then, of course, the Barcolana - the world's largest sailing regatta, which takes place here every year on the second Sunday in October.
